Jonathan D. Sellitto ’01 Abbey Culinary Arts Club

Portsmouth Abbey School’s mission is “to help young men and women grow in knowledge and grace” through academics, athletics, and the arts. Now these include the Culinary Arts, which feed the body along with the mind and the soul.

Students in the Jonathan D. Sellitto ’01 Abbey Culinary Arts Club learn to appreciate good food and all that goes into its preparation. They practice professional cooking techniques , take field trips to meet local purveyors—the region’s apple growers, specialty butchers, and fish farmers. They meet alumni from the food industry who can be examples of the culinary profession. They are exposed to the business side of owning/operating your own space.  They meet award-winning chefs in their restaurant kitchens, at food festivals, or on-campus for guest lectures and cooking demonstrations. They watch films, which convey the communal and transformative power of satisfying food. As important, they participate in combined community service experiences that remind us of the richness of serving others.  They learn that grace isn’t just a table prayer, but can be found in every aspect of growing, cooking, serving, and sharing food with others.

“Nothing would be more tiresome than eating and drinking if God had not made them a pleasure as well as a necessity.”  –Voltaire
